XOLOITZCUINTLES TO PLAY FOR THIRD PLACE 2014 COPA CHIVAS

Club Tijuana 2-2 (6-7) Atlas de Guadalajara: Semifinal

GUADALAJARA –Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente’s youth team came up short of reaching the 2014 Copa Chivas championship final after losing 7-6 in penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 draw against Atlas of Guadalajara in the semifinals Monday Feb 3.


It was a great effort put together by the Xoloitzcuintles in which they tried to impose its style of play for most of the match. Miguel Angel Rodriguez scored for Club Tijuana in the first half but the goal was disallowed as Rodriguez was whistled offsides.


Mathews Gomes gave the Xoloitzcuintles a 1-0 lead early in the second half but Atlas tied the match with a goal by Yair Delgadillo 20 minutes into the second half. Atlas took a 2-1 lead when Sergio Rodriguez sent in a corner kick four minutes later.


The Xoloitzcuitles tied the game and forced a penalty kick shootout when Atlas scored an own goal.


Club Tijuana reached the semifinals after finishing in second place in Group B in which it gained 10 points in the standings with three wins, a loss and a tie.


The Xoloitzcuintles will now face the losing team in the other semifinal between the Colombian national team and E.C. Victoria of Brazil in the third place match of the Copa Chivas international tournament.  The third place match is scheduled for Tuesday Feb. 4 at the Verde Valle facilities at 7:30 p.m. Pacific.
