XOLOITZCUINTLES OPEN COPA MX WITH A WIN
Club Tijuana 3-1 ZacatepecI; Group 3-Week 1
TIUANA- Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente opened COPA MX-2014 Apertura play with a 3-1 win against visiting Zacatepec 1948 in a Group 3 match night at Estadio Caliente.
Dario Benedetto scored in the 23rd minute, Joe Corona in the 32nd minute and Henry Martin in the 53rd. scored for the Xoloitzcuintles while Humberto Guzman scored for Zacatepec.
Benedetto send his goal in off a Dayro Moreno cross on a one-timer. Corona sent his in from just behind the penalty spot past Zacatepec goalkeeper Jafet Camou and into the net. Martin scored on a header from inside the penalty area to close out the scoring for the night. It was Martin’s first goal in an official match with Club Tijuana. Martin was an offseason acquisition from Liga de Ascenso side Merida FC.
Coach Cesar Farias sent goalkeeper Gibran Lajud, Israel Jimenez, Juan Carlos Nuñez, Hernan Pellerano, Alejandro Molina, Oliver Ortiz, Juan Arango, Moreno, Benedetto Martin and Corona in his starting lineup. Paul Arriola, Alfredo Moreno and Javeir Salas were second half substitutes.
The Xoloitzcuintles opened play in this tournament that features teams from the Mexican First Division and the Liga de Ascenso. The tournament winner will face the tournament winner from the 2015 version of the tournament.
Club Tijuana will return to LIGA MX action when it hosts Tigres UANL Friday Aug. 1 in a Week 3 match 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) at Estadio Caliente
