FOR THE SAN DIEGO CLASICO

SAN DIEGO –Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente will face Club America in the 2013 edition of the San Diego Clasico in a battle between the last two LIGA MX champions in a match to be played at Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).

It is an anticipated summer tradition in which Club Tijuana has been victorious on two occasions. The Xoloitzcuintles beat the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2011 and defended the title in 2012 against Chivas USA. Club Tijuana played to a 1-1 draw in the last edition of the Clasico against Club America at Qualcomm Stadium.

Both teams have played each other four times in official matches. Each team has a win while tying twice in the series that has featured important goals and generated an arsenal of highlights. One of them is Javier Yacuzzi’s score 13 seconds into the match at Estadio Azteca, the second fastest score in Mexican soccer history.

Xoloitzcuintles coach Jorge Almiron talked about the importance of this match which is the first preseason game for Club Tijuana heading into the 2013-2104 season.

“The important thing in these games is to see the team’s development but we know that the score matters in these types of games,” Almiron said Friday July 5 before the last practice heading into the game against Club America. “We are eager to start the tournament and this preparation process will be very important.
