CLUB TIJUANA UNDER-17 PLAYS TO 1-1 TIE VS. VERACRUZ
Christopher Johnson scores in Xoloitzcuintles debut
TIJUANA - The Under-17 squad of Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles tied 1-1 against Club Tiburones Rojos Veracruz U-17 in Week 10 action of the Clausura 2015 season of LIGA MX National Youth Tournament.
Xoloitzcuintles debutant Christopher Johnson from Mexicali gave the home side the 1-0 late in the first half. Roberto Balderas equalized for the visitors early in the second half to split the points.
Club Tijuana goalkeeper Samuel Velazquez came up big for his team on two occasions to keep the score at 0-0. Velazquez charged off line in the 8th minute to block a Manuel Garcia shot who was all alone in front of goal.
Veracruz’s Fernando Rodriguez tried a long range shot in the 21st minute that was heading into the lower corner of the goal. But once again Velazquez was there to come up with the sace.
Johnson stole the ball away on the right side of the field after a Veracruz defender tried to cut off a cross-field pass. Without thinking about it, Johnson fired that sailed over the goalkeeper’s head and into the back of the net.
In the second half Balderas brought the game level in the 55th after a corner kick.
The draw brings Club Tijuana to 11 points in the 17th position of the league table.
The two teams had to face each other today after Friday’s game had to be rescheduled due to traveling issues that the Veracruz squad faced. A major highway in Mexico was closed down during the weekend due to the road being frozen with ice which prevented the visitors from arriving on time.
