Club Tijuana presets its Women’s Xoloitzcuintles team
TIJUANA –Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente continues writing its history within Mexican soccer and it added another chapter Wednesday Aug. 13 when the club officially presented its Women’s team. The new all female players team will compete in the Premier Soccer League in the United States.
Club Tijuana General Manager Ignacio Palou and Andrea Rodebaugh, the team head coach and 21 players were present during a team news conference.
The female Xoloitzcuintles will be part of the WPSL in the United States. The tournament was formed in 1998 and it has 70 teams in different regional conferences. The female Xoloitzcuintles will compete in the Pacific South zone, which includes seven teams from California and Arizona.
Coach Rodebaugh said the games would be played in San Diego County because of technicalities and logistics with the opposing teams. She also said opponents have been invited to play at Estadio Caliente.
“The ideal thing would be to play here so they can see the that the atmosphere is completely different and that it can favor their league,” Rodebaugh said. “It would be very motivating for our players to play here.”
Club Tijuana will next work on establishing three Centro de Iniciacion Xoloitzcuintles soccer schools for women. The three CIX’s would be in Tijuana, Ensenada and Mexicali and would be an integral part of forming new talent in Baja California.
